I grew up with “stuffed animal” as the default term for any fluffy dude. Even if the plushie wasn’t an animal. I’d say for me, “plush” appeared in the mid-nineties as sort of an alternate term for “stuffed animal.”

It’s one of those things like bouncy castles where everyone knows them by a different name. I always knew them as “cuddly toys”.
