Cats do think all doors work the same. When I lived in an apartment the neighbour’s cat would get loose and try to go back into the corresponding door on a different floor.
Sure you may think “cats are stupid” but maybe they just know something we don’t.

How long has it been since? In story, in japanimes, it would take them a two-three weeks off + an in story 2 years timeskip for a character to go from (the picture http://gobolatula.com/pfm/comic/059-good-person/) to this.
i wouldn’t worry too much about it making a lot of sense lol
