If I recall correctly, Encyclopedia Brown went unarmed for two reasons: (1) his father was in charge of the cops, so no one would dare raise a hand against him in anger; and (2) his friend Sally was bulletproof and could tear a car in half.
I don’t think we have ever seen Katie make such earnestly happy faces as the ones in the last two panels. It’s as if she briefly swapped personalities with Pasqualo.

No, I think she was just hard as nails and liked solving mysteries while slugging Bugs Meany in the jaw.
